Footwear designed for Zellerfeld's 3D printing process. Made with Vizcom.

Our submission for Vizcom x Zellerfeld's mule design challenge. An experiment to ask "what if we conceptualised with no traditional tools whatsoever", we pulled back from the manual creative techinques design teams usually reach for and ran a 1.5 week design sprint, agressively using AI to conceptualise, refine, visualise and analyse our work. By putting multi-modal AI (LLMs, Image and Video models) as the only digital tools in our arsenal, we discovered new methodologies and ways to command and control AI beyond the hybrid approach we usually take (As well as finding and working around limitations). These new methods we have since applied in anger across client projects.

(Inspiration)

For our design, we wanted to build a monument to a moment rarely witness, yet fundamental to Vizcom’s process.  The instant coherence first emerges from noise inside a diffusion model. Zellerfeld’s 3d Printing process gave us the means to freeze that threshold in physical form. We designed Diffusion to walk that boundary between emergence and resolution.

The Diffusion Mule is a physical abstraction of the core technical principle that makes creative AI possible: reverse diffusion.  From a distance the shoe holds a clean, familiar silhouette; as the viewer draws closer, the surface visually deconstructs into voxel-like digital noise; capturing the exact moment where visual order emerges from latent space, frozen mid-process in 3D-printed form.
